Our History

People and friends who helped build our group.

The Group of Photobiology and Photomedicine was constituted in 1995, coincidentally with the return of the Pos-doctorate, developed in Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA between 1993 and 1995. The research work start with the application of photochemical, and photophysical techniques to Biological systems. The main focus of attention was the consolidation in Brazil of a new therapeutics proposal for treatment of the cancer known as Photodynamic Therapy (PDT). The group quickly consolidated its structure, receiving financial supports of many grants agencies like FAPESP, CNPq, FINEP, MCT and MS. The initial works of orientation were centralized in this theme and soon new partnerships went appearing. In 2000 it had beginning the first clinical trial, close to University Hospital at USP- Ribeirão Preto, involving the theme of the group, in the area of the cancer more specifically the treatment of skin. In 2001, we start new research fields focusing in Nanotechnology, Photoprocess and Tissue Engineering. In 2008 having been created the Center of Nanotechnology, Photoprocess and Tissue Engineers applied to health. The projects of the group were included, inside of the National Network of Nanotechnology, a group of more than 120 researchers acting in the theme with the most different focuses and applications. These projects in Network and in thematic groups allowed the creation of a huge network of collaboration involving more than 10 researchers centers of in Brazil and outside the country, in USA, Europe, Japan, etc. Between 2004 and 2005 a second Pos-Doc in the Medicine School in Paris (Paris 5 University), allowed the start of the work focusing in tissue Engineering. Today the group of Photobiology and Photomedicine develop research in the fields of Nanotechnology, Photoprocess and Tissue Engineering applied in the health. In 2010 we start to use our new facility 500 m2 inside the Center of Nanotechnology and Tissue Engineers FFCLRP- São Paulo University. On these 15 years of existence, the group, already participated and coordinated, more than 20 research projects, being 5 in thematic proposals, 4 national network projects and the National Institute of Science and Technology (INCT) in Nanotechnology.
