Joana Holanda

Holanda graduated in Music from UNICAMP (1997), with Master in Arts from the University of Iowa (2000) and PhD in Music from Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (2006), with an internship at City University, in London. She studied with Ney Fialkow, Ksenia Nosikova, Christian Tarla, Fulvia Escobar and Jorge Gomes. Taught at the Federal University of Pelotas from 2006 to 2018.

She was a member and co-founder of the NuMC Research Group - Nucleus of Contemporary Music at UFPel. Holanda coordinated several research and extension projects, having guided Scientific Initiation students and fellows linked to extension projects. She was part of the organizing team for the following events: Festival Contemporâneo RS (2009), 1st Latin American Festival of Music in Pelotas (2012) (FUNARTE Award for festivals), International Performa Congress (2013) and the First International Symposium on Music and Criticism (2017).

She is an active pianist and chamber musician, having premiered several works for solo piano and for ensembles of varied backgrounds. In 2013, Holanda released the CD Piano Presente on the SESC SP label, dedicated to the music of today´s Brazilian composers. For Irineu Franco Perpétuo, on the website of the concert magazine: “Without concessions, Piano Presente does not present ´background music´ but ´front music´, to be heard in a concentrated and attentive way by those who are hunting for sounds that translate , synthesize, decode and deconstruct this complex, vibrant and contradictory Brazil of the 21st century.” Her artistic and research production has been presented in festivals, symposiums and international congresses.

Since July 2018, Holanda is part of the teaching staff at the UFRN School of Music. In 2019, she coordinated the 1st ENCOMUN- Contemporary Music Meeting in Natal, with support of PROEX-UFRN . She taught extension courses on group piano teaching methodologies, another area of interest.

Holanda is a collaborating professor in the Music Graduate Program with emphasis on the artistic production of 20th and 21st centuries where she coordinates the ongoing research “Performance Practices in Piano Music from Latin America”.
