Welcome to the Symposium “Serotonin in Anxiety and Depression”!

Twenty one years ago John F. W. Deakin (University of Manchester) and Frederico G. Graeff (FFCLRP e FMRP) proposed a theory on the role of different subsystems mediated by serotonin in Anxiety and Mood Disorders. This theory resulted in the publication of several articles concerning the role of serotonin in different psychiatric disorders.
Even today this theory is being investigated, and consists of the major area of interest of many researchers working in our and other universities as well as abroad. Furthermore, there is no way to describe the immeasurable contributions produced by these researchers with their work to the scientific literature as well as the contribution on the education of several graduate students and researchers.
This symposium aims to analyze the theoretical implications of Deakin and Graeff’s proposal and has the contribution of several researchers from our country and abroad. It will also discuss the current status on the role of the serotonergic system and its interaction with other systems mediated by neurotransmitters such as opioids and cannabinoids.
We would like to invite you to join us in this scientific discussion. We hope that this is the first of several meetings that allow the creation of an environment more conducive to intellectual growth and the establishment of collaborations between laboratories around the world.
